Former HOLE/SMASHING PUMPKINS Bassist AUF DER MAUR Gets A&R Gig
January 25, 2006Karen Bliss of Jam! Music is reporting that Montreal musician Melissa auf der Maur, formerly of HOLE and THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, has been hired by Toronto-based EMI Music Canada as an artist & repertoire (A&R) consultant. She will seek out both Anglo and French-language acts of all genres.
"It happens more so internationally and in the U.S., where artists are brought in to participate in A&R," says EMI Music Canada A&R director Fraser Hill. "I don't think it has been done (here),where we have an artist on board that's definitely out there being a talent scout and consultant."
Auf Der Maur's gig is by no means on that scale, but unique all the same. She is still a working musician, currently writing for her next solo album for Capitol in America. Capitol is distributed by EMI Music Canada, so there is no danger of her position being a conflict of interest, and should one of her submissions sign with EMI Music Canada and she wants to get more involved in the A&R process, by co-writing with the act or seeing the recording through from beginning to end, that too is open, says Hill.
